A Young Male Requires Therapy For His Severe Depression, Relationship Problems, And For His Substance Abuse
Around three months ago I had lunch with a forty-three-year-old man named Benjamin who experiences severe depression, has relationship issues, and who is addicted to drugs and alcohol. As articulated by Benjamin, it is his drug addiction and alcoholism and his intense depression that has had the most to do with his constant relationship issues.
As stated by Benjamin, he is so crushed by his relationship issues and by both of his medical conditions that he in actual fact has no desire to complete much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to complete one semester of graduate school in psychology.
Benjamin's condition makes me question if he is an example of an individual who can look within and perceive his drug abuse and drinking problems and do something constructive about these problems. Or, to the contrary, if he is someone who has to hit the very bottom before he gets drug and alcohol dependency rehab that results in long lasting recovery.
It may be asked how counseling would help his drug and alcohol addiction. First of all, there are some newly produced doctor-prescribed meds that can help Benjamin avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse, help him through the alcohol and drug detox process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in treatment he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the different stages of alcoholism.
Third, Benjamin would learn to accept the fact that there is utterly nothing positive about substance abuse and unhealthy and excessive drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the path to shattered relationships, a premature death, legal problems, financial difficulties, deteriorating health, and poor work and school performance. Fourth, counseling for his relationship problems and his depression might help him deal with these psychological problems more successfully and perhaps create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in rehab he could also learn more about the various symptoms of alcoholism that he has exhibited.
Since Benjamin doesn't have the ambition to carry out much of anything in his life, it is clear that he badly needs a little hope for a more fulfilling life. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the treatment he needs for his acute depression and chemical dependency and remain in his treatment routine.
Benjamin is simply too young to be overwhelmed in life. He doesn't understand this at the moment but if he can learn how to remove himself from alcohol and drugs through drug and alcohol rehabilitation and get the counseling he needs for his acute depression, he can turn his life around and begin living with passion, direction, and with self-respect.
Enhanced relationships, positive change, self esteem, and a meaningful life are certainly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can become motivated to seek the medical rehab he needs, follow through with his treatment protocol, live his life in a healthy and drug and alcohol-free manner, and learn how to foster a more positive attitude about his existence.
